How to tune your string instrument in 432 tuning

If you are a string player it is easy to tune your instrument in 432 tuning. This is because the strings of these instruments do not have fixed tuning. In fact the string section is very flexible concerning tuning. It is common during a performance the woodwinds to get sharper because the players make their instruments warmer with every blow. Thus the tuning is raised. So the strings compensate for this raise by playing a little sharper.

What one needs to tune his instrument to 432 Hz is only the right frequency tuning fork. There are different web sites that are selling 432 tuning forks. That is a good way to have the423 frequency always in your pocket if you plan to play outside of your home. Also you will have to spend some money on the tuning fork. For those interested here is a link: http://www.swb256.com/

I prefer using a digital solution, because it is free and it can be uploaded on your phone, tablet or mp3 player. The only one small disadvantage is that you need battery to play it. Here how it is done:

  1. Go to http://onlinetonegenerator.com/
  2. Click on the “432Hz Frequency” navigation on the left or write 432 in the box.
  3. Click the “Save” button.
  4. Now you can find the 432.wav – 10 seconds of sine 432 frequency - downloaded in your default download folder.

Whatever method you use to generate the 432 Hz frequency the best way to tune the other strings is to do it by ear. Thus you guarantee that your fifths are always in tune in any tuning system.
